Dr. Ellen Millsaps & Provost Kina Mallard

Fifty-one new members were inducted into the Tennessee Delta Chapter of Alpha Chi Sunday, Sept. 20, at Thomas Recital Hall at 3:00 p.m.

The officers and sponsors conducted the ceremony, during which family members and invited faculty members were asked to stand as their student was initiated.

In addition, the National Council of Alpha Chi voted to extend honorary membership to Provost Dr. Kina Mallard and to President Dr. Randall O'Brien. Dr. O'Brien was unable to attend, but Dr. Ellen Millsaps, vice president of the National Council of Alpha Chi, presented Dr. Mallard with a framed certificate, pin, and Alpha Chi medallion. Dr. Mallard then spoke to the new initiates commending them on their outstanding academic records. She further thanked the families who attended, some from as far away as Virginia, as well as the faculty members who were invited by the initiates for their involvement in the students' lives.

Following the ceremony, a reception in honor of Dr. Mallard and the new initiates was held in the lobby of the Music Building.

Alpha Chi is an interdisciplinary honor society dedicated to "making scholarship effective for good." It invites to membership those full-time juniors and seniors who are in the upper 10 percent of their class. This year the cut-off for membership was 3.78 GPA. Members participate in Operation Inasmuch and sponsor two Scholastic Book Fairs each year to promote literacy by donating books to needy children. In addition, members co-sponsor the Dean's List Reception which honors those students who achieve a GPA for the semester of 3.5 or better. Membership in Alpha Chi is considered the highest academic honor at Carson-Newman College
