Lady Eagles looking for first win

Lady Eagle head basketball coach Dean Walsh had envisioned some close games at the beginning of the season; however, it was hoped that the outcomes of the games would have happened a little differently.

The Carson-Newman women's basketball team began the season with four straight losses by a total of 11 points, the last coming to Columbus State in the final day of the Lady Saints Classic.

The Lady Eagles look to rebound and find a winning streak heading into the Red Roof Classic over Christmas Break.

Carson Newman 66, Columbus State 69

The Lady Eagles held a five-point lead with three minutes remaining in overtime before Columbus State scored the last eight points of the game.

Carson-Newman had a chance to win the game in regulation as they had the ball with 26 seconds left, but Angela Volentine was charged with an offensive foul to end the fourth quarter.

Columbus State's Maria Grimes led all scorers with 33 points, including a school record nine three-pointers.

CSU's Hali Moore made a free throw to give CSU a 61-60 lead, but CNC scored six straight points to lead 66-61 with three minutes remaining in overtime.

Moore and Ashley Stafford scored on lay-ups for CSU to cut the lead to 66-65 with 2:12 remaining in overtime. CSU stopped the Lady Eagles three consecutive times and Grimes made two foul shots with 20 seconds remaining to give the Lady Cougars a 67-66 lead.

Carson-Newman's Ashley Kyle missed a jumper with six seconds remaining and Stafford grabbed the rebound and was fouled, sealing the win for CSU.

Emily Mason led Carson-Newman (0-4) with 15 points, while Shari Buford recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Ashley Tipton added 12 points on four three pointers.

The Lady Eagles shot 38 percent from the floor and held a 36-29 rebound advantage.

North Georgia used double-digit scoring from four different players to beat Carson Newman 91-83 in the second game of the Lady Saints Classic here.
