The Carson-Newman Theater department will present "The House of Atreus." Nov. 9-10, 12-13 in Gentry Auditorium.

"The House of Atreus" is a version of three plays by Aeschylus, "Agamemnon," "The Libation Bearers," and "The Furies." The play focuses on the tragic circumstances involving the House of Atreus. In Agamemnon, Clytemnestra, wife to Agamemnon, kills him for her lover Aegisthus. In the second play, Orestes, son of Clytemnestra, takes revenge on the murder of his father by killing his mother. In the third play, the Furies, mythological characters, known for avenging murders, pursue Orestes and the Goddess Athena sets up a court to try Orestes for his actions. In court, Apollo represents Orestes. The jurors' final vote results in a tie and Athena casts the deciding vote in Orestes favor.

"The themes in the play speak strongly to modern America. Family issues, anti-war messages, and political power are driving forces in the play," said Dr. Ev Robertson, the Director of Theatre.

The production involves music and dancing in a traditional Greek Chorus style. Actors will be costumed in modern dress.

"All of the cast is very talented. We plan to work hard in every aspect of the show and to entertain everyone that comes out," said Jessica Elbissouri, senior.

Sophomore Tyler Mills will serve as the assistant director of the play. The cast is made up of the following Carson-Newman students: Alex Ward, Rachel Percy, Brandon Castle, Andrew Cox, Trista Malawy, James Crowder, Destry Cloud, Jay Wall, Danielle Schlafer, Laura Harris, Jessica Elbissouri, Nikki Crase, Ben Davis, Carl Williams, Carey Hunter, Courtney Woolard, Kyrie Gordon, Hannah Wilson, Rachel Nave, Victoria Crosby, Gloria Greene, Jennifer Tramel, and Hannah Oliver.

The play opens on Friday the 9th at 7:30 p.m. Performances on Saturday the 10th at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Monday the 12th at 7:30 p.m., and on Tuesday the 13th at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. CLW credit will be offered for the Monday and Tuesday performances.
