Students, faculty and alumni alike are stepping up to join the international relief efforts providing aid to Haiti. On January 12, a magnitude-7.0 earthquake devastated large portions of the country, killing thousands and destroying cities. As a result of the quake, families are scattered, children are homeless, and parts the already-impoverished nation are in a state of ruin.
The SGA cabinet positions of Secretary of the Student Body, Chief Justice, and Secretary of Public Relations remain open despite efforts by current members and scheduled elections. "We will be working […] on trying to recruit more students into SGA as the numbers are a little low right now," President Andrew Ingalls said.
With the new year came changes in the cafeteria - changes that the students have definitely noticed. "The food has been significantly better this semester; I no longer dread eating caf food!" said Junior Taryn Stait. The changes most students noticed ranged from the physical movement of the various food stations, a greater variety of food, more condiments, a central location for the silverware, and the overall preparedness of the food.
The campus ministry Special Projects Other Than Summer (S.P.O.T.S.) will be offering students the opportunity to serve Haiti and the Dominican Republic during a Mayterm trip. "It is life-changing," Rev. Chad Morris, associate director of Campus Ministries, said.
The forensics team recently brought home first place, beating out several other colleges and universities when they traveled to compete in the Marks Invitational Tournament in Pensacola, FL. Many members of the team took first place in their individual events as well.
Senior ROTC nurses recently received their active duty orders and are preparing for the next step in their lives. Carson-Newman Eagle Battalion has seven MS-IV, senior level nurses, that will be graduating this May. However, graduation is only the first step for them.
Most people spend the month of February displaying love for others, but Counseling Services Department would like for students to spend time loving themselves. During this month of Body Image Awareness Month, Counseling Services Director Jennifer Catlett is ready to improve the way students think about their bodies.
